Travelling in South Africa
When visiting South Africa you probably want to do more than just volunteering at one our exciting projects, so here are some tips and suggestions to make your visit worth your while!
Coast to Coast
The Coast to Coast is a great backpackers' (and volunteers) guide to adventure and accommodation in South Africa. You can pick up your free pocket sized book at any backpackers or we'll give you one upon arrival. It is very helpful to plan your trip, fun and friendly. The book provides you with all the information about places to stay, places to see and things to do in South-Africa. You can also order your copy for free and see all the content on http://www.coastingafrica.com.
Bazbus
This well-known hop-on-hop-off backpacker’s bus drives you through South-Africa where you can hop on (or off) whenever you want at all of the greatest places! They also stop in Swaziland and offer a Shuttle Service to Mozambique. Backpackers, students, volunteers and other low budget travellers use this great bus to meet new people and have a hassle free tour through this great country. Khaya can offer a 5 % discount on all their tickets, so book it with Khaya for your discounted price. Great way of travelling after your volunteer project!

Overland tours with NOMAD
By far the most exciting trip you will ever experience in this lifetime! Nomad Tours has an incredibly wide range of trips and adventures taking you off the beaten track into wildest Africa. You can go for a tour along the Garden Route or a 21-day tour from Cape Town to Nairobi in Kenya and anything in between! You will enjoy your trip in a fully equipped overland truck (camping or accommodated) and go to places where few people will ever come. Contact Khaya for a 10% discount on their already good prices!
Combining projects and activities
If you feel like participating in multiple projects, or combining a volunteering project with a different experience like a safari or adventure trip: this is of course possible. For instance if you want your Walmer Township Project followed up by raising lion cubs at the Lionpark Kroonstad Project, it would be a far better experience to travel there by BazBus than it would be flying! If you have made your plan, feel free to contact us so we can have a look at what transportation options would be ideal for your trip!
Additional traveller’s information
Emergency services such as auto repairs, sea rescue, ambulances, police and hospitals are available 24 hours per day. Most highways provide SOS phones at specific points right next to the road. These phones are clearly marked and can be used free of charge, for any emergency while you are on the road.
There are also national emergency numbers available, 24 hours per day, for people who might need information and assistance on/for instance aids, child abuse, rape or suicide related incidents.
