Volunteer update from Port Elizabeth

pe volunteersUpdate from PE

Second update from our volunteers in Port Elizabeth to see what they have been doing!

It has been a while now, so let’s not wait any longer and tell you more about the experiences of our volunteers and colleagues in Port Elizabeth before the holiday season starts!

Over the last couple of weeks we had to say goodbye to Claire, Eva, Frederique, Nora and Tessa, thanks a lot for your help ladies!

In these last couples of weeks we have also been busy with our holiday program, a dance workshop, home visits and support groups. The volunteers went on some cool trips and outings as well to explore the beauty of South Africa and to get to know the people of Port Elizabeth.

Volunteer activities

Last week we had an amazing dance event that was organized by our intern Frederique and long-term volunteer Tanja. This workshop was quite a success as you can see on the picture. People of different cultures came together to dance and they all had a blast!

Jessy and Janne are preparing a second holiday program and are busy with sponsoring and organizing fun activities. At Missionvale Care Centre our volunteer Amber is really making a difference at the primary school and the children just adore her. Tanja is using her communication skills to assist the care workers with house visits and support groups.

We have a group of 13 Dutch students from Fontys University that are staying with us for 5 weeks, so the house is nice and lively at moments :) All the more fun though!

The girls help out at our crèches, Door of Hope and at Human Dignity Centre and they will assist Jessy and Janne during our holiday program the last two weeks of this year. This weekend they went to Nature’s Valley where they enjoyed the incredible natural beauty and great outdoors.

To interact with the local community, an evening within Walmer Township was organized. The group did meet some local families and they got a taste of the local culture while meeting people at the local pub and eating some traditional dishes and watching some traditional Xhosa dances.

The volunteers seem to enjoy the South African lifestyle while working at the projects and love to interact with the locals and we are planning to end this year with a bang.
