Volunteer Projects

Volunteering abroad is getting more and more popular and offers individuals an organized way of having an unique experience. Especially South Africa is a growing destination for volunteers of all ages. With this increasing flow of volunteers from abroad, volunteering projects with different motivations start doing business.

On the one side there are fair organizations, like Khaya Volunteer Projects, whose mission it is to enhance and support the volunteer projects as much as possible and are actually actively involved with the projects they offer, charge fair prices and donate directly to the project. Khaya is a small local organization employing local staff and are actually present where you come to volunteer.

On the other side, unfortunately, we see an increase in organizations with a sharp focus on just making as much turnover as possible. These organizations almost treat their volunteering program as a large-scale holiday destination, and sometimes house more than 100 volunteers per project at the same time. We at Khaya don’t believe in this way of doing business, after all, the main point is to see advancement on the long term while the project’s location is able to maintain its own characteristics and vision. Doubling prices to make as much profit as possible without even having visited the actual project is something we don't support at all and we know most people also see it differently.

For this reason, we at Khaya carefully select our projects and make sure the volunteers can be of added value to them. Keeping this in mind, we have decided for the following categories to be needful for our volunteers:

  • Developing Communities
  • Working with Wildlife
  • Wildlife and Nature Conservation
  • Development through Sports
  • Childcare and Orphanages
  • Education

Besides the fact volunteers can be of added value at the volunteering projects, another thing we believe is important is how the donations are spent. With all our projects, we are sure the donation is used towards improving the projects needs. Not a single penny is spent on marketing, the directors’ car or any other purely commercial purposes, as we sadly see with an increasing amount of other volunteer organization that charge ridiculous amounts of which only 30% are actual costs, so be aware and choose wisely.
