About

Light School is a school in Uriri, Kenya, which provides orphans and vulnerable children with food, clothing, education and the proper care they require. Currently there are 196 pupils in the school of which 30 of them are orphans. The mission of the school is to challenge every pupil to achieve and be the best they can academically, behaviorally and spiritually. The purpose of the school is to provide a safe environment for the children of the Uriri area to live and learn in. The school is built on ethical values and strives to promote culture and tradition to the students together with an understanding and appreciation of the modern world.

The school was created due to most the people in Uriri living so far away from good schools with good infrastructures. Due to the high rates of poverty, disease and harsh living conditions, children often lose one or both of their parents. These children are often taken into the care of other villagers to provide them with shelter but because they are often poor themselves, they cannot provide the children with food, clothing and an education which they receive from Light School.

Having a positive influence on the children by providing them with food, clothing and a chance to develop themselves academically, physically and spiritually will hopefully extend out to the local community as well by providing jobs and transferring knowledge.

As a volunteer on this project you will benefit by gaining new experiences and ways of life by helping others in need.

Needs

Light School is a non-government school and is completely run by volunteers. All funds for food, clothing, education, construction and running of the school has to be raised by the School itself. Due to this there are many ways in which you can help the school by volunteering to teach, supporting feeding programs, making general donations to support construction, furniture and equipment costs, stationary, books and materials.

More specifically the following is needed:

  • Public Relations or Good-will ambassador volunteers
  • French, German and English teachers
  • Volunteers to mobilize more volunteers and interns around the globe and manage the programme
  • Volunteers to mobilize global citizens to sponsor child education
  • Volunteers to help with Fund-raising towards our many programmes
  • Volunteers to run feeding, computer and Library programmes
  • Volunteers to coach pupils in outdoor games, songs and dance
  • We need more computers and internet installations
