About
As the older children go to school during the day (until 14h00), your working hours will be flexible. During the day you can help with the young children, do house chores, clean up, and prepare afternoon activities and much more. In the afternoon when the children come home from school you can devote your full attention to the kids.
Since January 2012, 4 younger children are receiving home schooling as they could no longer attend regular schools. Volunteers assist in the daily school programme for which full teaching kits are supplied. It requires a bit of reading and preparing but anybody can do it!!
You can be involved in the following activities:
Individual attention: It sounds so simple but with daily individual attention you can really help these children. You can for example teach them the English alphabet, how to count, about animals and about which colors there are. Playing games can also be a part of your tasks. As a volunteer you play a big part in the individual development of the children.
Homework: When the older kids come home from school you can help them with their homework. You can improve their English by talking to them or help them with reading and writing assignments. If you’re good at maths, you can help them with this. It doesn’t matter what you are good at, you can always help them out with some subjects.
Organize: If you volunteer you can regularly organize activities, not only for fun but also to increase the social skills of the children and to work on behavioral challenges.
Household chores: Mama Gladys receives help from several ladies who cook and clean, but there are many other tasks where she could really use your help. Think of organizing the administration, files about the children and other tasks that are not part of the daily household, to get a better insight in the current situation and translate this into goals for the future.
Extra attention: Some children need special attention because they lag behind with their personal development. Some cannot read or write properly and that is where you can help out and make a difference.
Accommodation
You will be accommodated in one of the volunteer houses of Khaya. Here you will spend your time with other international volunteers. You will be responsible for your own transport, food and beverages. The costs for the accommodation are included in the price. Depending on availability you will either have a private room or share a room with a maximum of two other volunteers. Transport is often something you can share with other volunteers to reduce the costs. A rental car will cost about 250 euro / 270 USD /230 Sterling per month for a older car that you can use locally.
The benefit of having a car is that you can travel in the weekends and visit places after work. The volunteer houses usually accommodate both local as well as international volunteers and students. They often have a swimming pool, cleaning services and are close to facilities such as the beach, bars, restaurants and shops.
We do keep in mind that older and younger volunteers don’t always mix and have alternative options for more private accommodation.
