About

Tanzania and all the sub-Saharan African countries are badly affected by the epidemics of poverty and HIV. The number of orphans and street children is growing. Efforts have been made by various local organizations to protect these children by offering much-needed education as well as skill-development training. Thousands of orphan children who suffer from extreme poverty, HIV/AIDS and hopelessness leave their villages and travel to Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Moshi and other cities, where they most often end up worse off on the street. Most orphanages in Tanzania lack resources and are under-staffed. Orphanages in Tanzania focus primarily on offering formal and informal schooling and a safe place to live and study.

The orphanage in Arusha where you can volunteer was started by Faraja, who stared looking after street children and taking them in his small mud built house. As there was a lack of education for these children he started a school and vegetable gardens to provide in their own needs. The school has expanded and offers education to more then 100 children aged 4-18 years old. The orphanage has found funding to build a new dormitory where 30-40 children can stay, but unfortunately the given funding has not been enough to finish the building and hopefully the near future will give them the opportunity to move into the new building.

Which Programs Do We Offer?

Volunteers generally work with the following activities:

  • In the morning you arrive at the school and assist in your allocated class room. You will work together with the teachers to see how and where you can assist.
  • Teach English, Math’s or other subjects for 3-4 hours a day.
  • After school all children are provided with a meal, for some of them the only meal they get that day. You will assist in dishing up and handing out plates and cleaning afterwards.
  • There are lots of possibilities if you want to be involved after school by helping in the vegetable gardens, playing with the children, assisting with sports activities, arts and much more.

Needs

There is, besides daily teaching and assistance, also a need for financial support. Any possible gifts and donations provided by volunteers and their network of people are extremely appreciated. Instead of collecting goods and materials for donation, it is recommended to purchase and donate this on location, where stationary and school uniforms are affordable.

Guidance and Supervision

The work of any volunteer or student is coordinated by our Khaya coordinator in Arusha, who will bring you to the project the first day and look after your needs and questions.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in a volunteer house where you will be part of the daily life and learn Swahili, eat local food and get to understand the culture. There is a cook and Christopher the coordinator who will make you feel at home. You will possibly share a room with other volunteers. There is local food 3 times a day. Tanzanian food includes meat, chicken, seafood and vegetarian dishes. Showers do no not always have hot water, but the weather is hot enough to shower cold!

Walk the streets in the area, shop for fruit and other foods and experience the friendliness and bustle of every day life!

It is important that volunteers of this project understand the importance of the following:

  • To follow rules regarding clothing and appearance
