About

Currently in Uganda, more than 30% of the population is under the age of 15 of which 1 million of those are orphans and 600,000 are homeless. These children spend their days living without food or shelter and end up having to beg in order to stay alive.
A few months ago Kennedy, the project facilitator, came across 11 children that were living next to the prison cells at a police station. After hearing their story of how they came together as a group on the streets and lived for 5 months without clothing or shelter, he helped them to find a home in what is now the orphanage for this project.

Needs

As anyone with children will know, it’s not easy raising 1 or 2, let alone 11. The challenges that are faced with these children are from providing them their basic needs of food and clothing to getting them a good education.
The Ugandan schools start on the 5th of September so in order to not let the children miss out on this opportunity, they had to be transferred to a small room next to their new residence house as the house requires renovation work to be done before they can move in. USD 295 needs to be raised in order for the renovations to take place. The project relies on donations and volunteers to help take care of the children in the best way possible.

Guidance and Supervision

When you arrive, you will be given half a day of orientation by staff members of the project. This orientation will include covering areas such as culture, safety, locations, transportation as well as being introduced to your project. You will also be able to contact the project personnel 24 hours a day.

Tasks

Your days on the project will be spent as follows:
  • Monday (Art/Music/Dance)
  • Tuesday (Math)
  • Wednesday (English)
  • Thursday (World Geography/African History)
  • Friday (Games and weekly trip arranged by the project)
  • Daily: Assist Julian with preparing meals. Helping children with homework and getting ready for the daily activities.

Accommodation

Your accommodation is in a comfortable home stay with shared rooms, a lounge with a TV, a fully equipped kitchen and bathroom with hot showers. There is a computer for you to use but you are more than welcome to bring your own computer and connect it to the free Wi-Fi.
The home is a family environment run by a family so you are required to clean your own rooms.
When working at the orphanage you will come back to the house to a wonderful meal prepared by Juliet for lunch. For breakfast and dinner you will have everything you need to make meals for you and the other volunteers. Tea and coffee are available throughout the day. If you have any special diet requirements, please let us know before-hand so we can arrange it for you.
During your stay, you will be able to access various internet cafes in towns close to the projects area which will be shown to you during orientation.
