About
The project is situated in a village which is high up on a terraced hill above Kabele Town. The villagers rely on farming to provide for basic survival and because there is no fresh water nearby, villagers need to travel a great distance down the steep terrain and back up again to bring the water to their households.
There are two primary projects at village. The first being a water pumping system to get running water up to the village from the river below and the second being the construction of a school for the children as currently they attend school in the local church and a wooden structure next to the guest house.
Needs
The needs of the project at the moment are primarily to get the water system from the river to the village and once that is completed, to build a school for the children.
Volunteers are requested to help raise funds prior to joining the project and should aim to raise about USD 125 for each week they stay. Groups of volunteers should try aim to raise between USD 1000 and USD 2000 for their stay. These funds combined with the funds from third party donors are critical in getting the relevant tools and materials to complete the work.
Guidance and Supervision
When you arrive, you will be given half a day of orientation by staff members of the project. This orientation will include covering areas such as culture, safety, locations, transportation as well as being introduced to your project. You will also be able to contact the project personnel 24 hours a day.
Accommodation
There are two options for accommodation on this project.
Home Stay
Most volunteers choose this option to live in the village at the guest house that has been built just for volunteers. Be prepared for living a simple life in this mountain village as there is no running water or electricity. Blazing fires will allow for plenty of hot water when you need it. Fresh water will be provided for you to drink and you will be well fed with some traditional Ugandan food. During your stay you will be provided with fresh sheets, pillows and blankets but you are advised to bring your own air mattress.
Private Accommodation
If you prefer a more western style of accommodation then you can choose to stay in Kabele Town itself where you will have to hike up the mountain to the village each day. Note that this accommodation is not included in the package costs and you will have to make arrangements in advance with us if you prefer the private accommodation.
