About

The village of this project is located only 7 kilometers from Jinja, which is a tourist hub and host to many adventure activities. 150 families make up this vibrant community that relies on various forms of farming in order to survive. Within the community they have developed a bartering system due to the ever rising cost of food at the local market. Life in this village is very much the same as it was when it came into existence just over 150 years ago.

Most volunteer organizations overlook this village as it is too far afield to warrant the effort and costs of running a project here.
This village can be summed up as serene, peaceful, friendly, loving, accommodating and always welcoming to visitors.

You can either choose to help out with after school and summer school education or do youth work and mentoring. The teachers can teach English, Maths, Science, Geography, Social Sciences, History, Physical Education, Art and Music. Volunteers opting to do youth work and mentoring will team up with a village coordinator who will help and work with you to engage the young minds around the village.

Needs

The most important need for this village at the moment is the ability for children - who can’t attend a government run program – to be able to be educated. Currently the school is merely a wooden structure with a tin roof but plans are in the works to raise enough funds to build a school with 10 classrooms.

Guidance and Supervision

When you arrive, you will be given half a day of orientation by staff members of the project. This orientation will include covering areas such as culture, safety, locations, transportation as well as being introduced to your project. You will also be able to contact the project personnel 24 hours a day.

Accommodation

Your accommodation is in basic home located within the project area. The home includes cable TV, running water, compost toilets and well-arranged twin rooms. Each bed has a mattress and a mosquito net. Volunteers will receive 3 meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner) which will be prepared by a local mother.
